What’s New – Summer 2016
Summer is here!
Lincoln Archaeology Group got off to an early start in 2016 and we already have five test pits under our collective belts. These pits were part of the final phase of Ermine Street Community Dig. Finds processing and conservation work will continue for a little longer. One of our key sponsors is Bishop Grosseteste University and the excavation enabled students to get real, hands-on experience of the archaeology. Here’s a short video showing everyone at work – BGU Community Archaeology. We loved having them with us and wish them all the best in their future careers.
We’re putting the final touches to the project and will be holding an Exhibition and Presentation on The Ermine Street Community Dig at The Collection in Lincoln from 5pm -7pm on Saturday 19th November 2016. It’s free, so put a note in your diary now.
We began digging back in February, so with our archaeologists and volunteers already match fit, we are currently out and about on a number of new ventures.
Bishop Grosseteste University Archaeology Field School – Volunteers from LAG and staff from Banks Newton Heritage are again supporting Bishop Grosseteste University’s summer excavation. This year’s training excavation is taking place at Harpswell, Lincolnshire and will be uncovering the medieval landscape. Places are available for students and volunteers. The Summer School will run from Monday 20th June to Friday July 29th 2016 and be led by Senior Lecturer Dr Duncan Wright. For more information click on the link above or see the short film Archaeology at BGU for more details.
LAG members have a wealth of experience having previously worked on the field school’s digs at at Sudbrooke Roman Villa site and the Roman and medieval remains of Ermine Street at Bishop Grosseteste University’s Lincoln campus.
We will be running an open day at the Harpswell site, which is situated approximately 14 miles north of Lincoln, on Saturday July 16th as part of the Festival of British Archaeology – Harpswell Open Day 2016 .
It’s a great chance to explore this medieval, and earlier, site which has never been excavated before. There will be lots of fun activities for adults and children so do come along and see what we’ve uncovered.
Lincolnshire Medieval Graffiti Project – we are continuing to provide support and training to individuals and groups who wish to take part in this exciting project. We are always looking for more volunteers to record the fascinating graffiti that illustrates the layers of history hidden in our churches. With over 600 churches in the county there is likely to be a church near you! See our Medieval Graffiti page for more details.
Finds Processing Sessions – We will be processing the finds from the Ermine Street Dig test pits at our regular Wednesday afternoon sessions at BGU. We are also continuing our series of free specialist workshops on different aspects of archaeology including ceramics, artefact conservation and site recording.
Meanwhile, feel free to explore our website. For a tour of our previous test pits, have a look at the Dig Diary. You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook, just click on the icons at the top of the page. Do contact us with any queries you have, we would love to hear from you.
